What do you listen to while you work?

I got so overjoyed this morning when I picked up my smartphone & saw this topic prompt light up my notification screen. My mind went into overdrive, thinking of all the ways I could approach this prompt, but stopped short when I tried to think of a way to write without word vomiting a whole bunch of things that would turn into tangents only myself would understand, & that you probably wouldn’t give two shits about. (See what I mean? A stupid tangent.)

So let me get straight to the answer. The things I listen to while I am working totally depends on my mood, but also my current obsession. I have a couple of pinned Spotify playlists that I have personally curated that I will rotate through. I will listen to ambient background sounds on YouTube as well. However, in the most recent weeks, I have been predominantly listening to a couple of select artists on repeat: Fuji Kaze, imase, that Polish guitarist I want to interview, Lucky Kilimanjaro & Arctic Monkeys. I’m going to an Arctic Monkeys concert in September, so I am trying to brush up on their discography at the moment. My mommy brain has forgotten a lot of the lyrics that used to be easy for me to memorize.

As of today, I am totally obsessed with Fuji Kaze‘s music. I have been listening to his album LOVE ALL SERVE ALL on repeat for the past several days. Fuji Kaze‘s music is super catchy & the lyrics are so thoughtful & full of meaning/intention/purpose. I think I am slowly becoming a, as he would put it, Kazetarian. I don’t think I would become a devout vegetarian like he is, but I absolutely would follow his philosophies & world views. This artist has such a pure & open heart. It’s hard not to fall in love with his melodic tunes. Listening to Fuji Kaze’s music totally puts me in a good mood, & helps improve my productivity. I get all excited listening to his music, & continuously work without stopping, which is rare because I very, very easily get distracted by anything & everything around me.

That’s all for now. I am going to continue working on this blog, & listening to some killer jams. Until the next beat, cheers!

Today’s song of the day:

What is your favorite genre of music?

This quote I found on Pinterest completely describes my musical interests. Also, yes. People still use Pinterest.

I am willing to listen to just about any type of music, even music in languages I don’t understand. I like songs in almost every genre or category, except Gregorian Chanting. That’s where I permanently draw the line. (I do not consider that music in the least.) My dad once bought a Gregorian Chanting CD from a CD subscription catalog (yes, that’s how looong ago it was), & he played it the entire time our family drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It was torture, but he wouldn’t allow us to change it. My mom was so irritated after that 7 hour car ride that she forbade my dad from listening to it on the drive home.

I don’t listen to a lot of songs from all genres, but there are a few songs I like from each category. For example, I don’t frequently listen to Country Western music; I listen to it very rarely, but there are a few Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, & Patsy Cline songs I like. I also don’t frequently listen to Reggae music, but I have been known to bop along to Bob Marley’s greatest hits.

Another genre that I do not listen to is Chinese pop, like C-pop or Canto-pop. It’s not that I think the music is bad. The one thing that turns me off from listening to this genre is the fact that all of the songs & their topics/themes sound the same. Every song is a love song, either about unrequited love, lost love, heartache, cute love, or sad love. There is no variety in the song subjects, & most of the songs are ballads. It just feels repetitive to listen to C-pop or Canto-pop music a lot of the time, so I avoid that genre most of the time.

Three of the biggest music genres I listen to the most these days are J-pop, Alternative Rock, & Jazz. I also love listening to other genres relating to these main categories, like: J-rap, Brit-Rock, & Bossa Nova. I used to be a super huge fan of Japanese male idol groups from the talent agency Johnny’s Entertainment, but since most of my favorite groups have either retired, broke up due to public controversy, or have disbanded, I haven’t really payed much attention to the new idol bands.

If you were to ask me which bands are on my repeat playlist, it would be:

I would definitely say that my preferences in music lean towards catchier songs, you know, songs with a catchy melody or chorus to sing along to. I also enjoy songs I can sing & bop along to. I wouldn’t say I have a great singing voice, but it’s at least adequate enough to carry a tune when I sing karaoke with my friends. Also, I have sung karaoke in public more than once & have not yet been booed off stage, so I’d say that counts as me being an okay singer.

I also like electronic music with no lyrics, LoFi ones that I can put on all day while I’m writing or doing house chores. Sometimes I will find a low key LoFi music stream on YouTube & run it in the background on the TV while I am playing with my little bean. She enjoys it as well. At least I think she does. It keeps her focused on playing in one spot & not running around the house like a child strung out on a sugar rush.

That pretty much sums up my taste in music. I could go in depth about every single specific type of music I listen to & which bands from each category I like, but that would take FOREVER! I’d like to end this post with my usual song of the day, but I will insert a playlist instead. Cheers!

Today’s PLAYLIST of the day:

I’m starting my year of lists with the music category. Here I’ve listed my Top SIX all-time favorite bands/groups/artists, with the corresponding Top FIVE favorite songs by the artists. I’ve also included a few honorable mentions for each group, but that’s really just a fluffed up way of saying I couldn’t make up my mind & choose just 5 songs, so I crammed in a bunch of others at the end. As you will notice, most of my top picks are from Rock and Roll groups.

A Pop-y, flashy Alt-Rock band a-lá fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the very first Alt-Rock band that I became a diehard fan of. I’ve seen this band several times in concert, & it always feels like a party amongst friends. This band’s music will always put me in a good mood, no matter what.

A band who’ll never let you forget that they hail from Portland, Oregon…but first, Alaska. With a lot to say about social issues & current events, this band surely knows how to tell a story with a super catchy, radio-friendly beat.

I love this smokey, Bluesy, Rock band with melodies that feel both gritty & soulful. This band always gives me a cozy, down home feeling, like I’m sitting on a porch while wearing my worn-in denim jacket & sipping on a glass of bourbon. (Did I mention that I’m going to see this band in concert this August?)

I’ve seen this band in concert before, & I can clearly state two facts. One, they sound just as fantastic live as they do on CD. Two, they sound nothing like The White Stripes. When I listen to this band, I imagine myself being in a motorcycle club & taking a relaxing cruise through open mountain roads (like in those over-glamourized outdoors/camping photos on Instagram).

All hail the British Invasion! Ok, I swear I’m not becoming an Anglophile. At least I think I’m not, but who knows? All I know is that Rock music from England is the tops! I really love the catchy, grungy, punk vibe from this band. Plus, lead singer Alex Turner is a pretty fit bloke…so, the eye candy is also a bonus.

My first memory of this band was back in the early 90s, when having a home computer with AOL internet was becoming popular. Our house had a clunky Compaq desktop computer with a pre-installed video player program that came with Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” music video along with some other random music videos. There wasn’t much for me to do on the computer in those days except for playing “Sam & Max Hit The Road” or play around with Microsoft Paint, but once I discovered this music video, I was playing it on repeat with no clue who this band was. It wasn’t until much later, in my 20s, that I truly started appreciating this chill, fun Alt-Rock band…which is why I’ve seen this band in concert several times already.
